Expanding our reach

Part of ensuring that no child in Tanzania lives with a treatable disability is accessibility. People travel from every corner to access our signature high-love, low-cost treatment and care. Ultimately, we aim to have a Kafika House in every region of the country.

Welcome to Likamba

Perhaps our boldest venture yet is our ambition to build Tanzania’s first paediatric rehabilitative surgery hospital on our beautiful stretch of land in Likamba, Arusha. Here’s what we are bringing into being:

  • A paediatric rehabilitative surgery hospital with four operating rooms and 50 inpatient beds, dedicated specifically to children with disabilities

  • An outpatient clinic, for assessment, treatment and follow-up

A 150-bed residential outpatient rehabilitation centre for pre-and post-operative care for children living with a surgically treatable disability

  • A resource centre for university graduates and professionals working in the paediatric surgery and rehabilitation field for upskilling the medical partners we work with in Tanzania

  • Pharmacy, x-ray, CT, laboratory, therapy clinic, offices, staff changing rooms and toilets, laundry, kitchen, and more.

Government partnership

Among our proudest partnerships is with the Tanzanian government, and we maintain a close, transparent collaboration with the Ministry of Health.

Our mission aligns perfectly with the Health Sector Strategic Plan’s mission to ‘provide sustainable health services with standards that are acceptable to all citizens without financial constraints based on geographical and gender equity.

Additionally, our work serves to further the National Rehabilitation Strategic Plan’s efforts toward ‘increasing the availability of services, and building the capacity of the rehabilitation workforce in Tanzania’.

Get involved

If you feel moved to make a difference, there are a number of wonderful ways to get involved. Whether you want to give of your time, talent, resources or love - here’s how to make it happen:

  • If you’re visiting Tanzania and have half a day to spare, why not pop in to say hello? We love to make new friends and share our special home - and the children will be thrilled to meet you. If you would like to bring items to donate, please get in touch with us - we have a wishlist you might be able to help us with.

  • Our volunteers bring love, joy and energy to our home, helping our children along their healing journey. Living, working and playing at Kafika House offers a profoundly rewarding experience for our children and our volunteers. Are you at least 21 years old and able to commit to a full month with us?

  • Often described as life-changing - these trips are transformative learning journeys for parents and teens. Come to Tanzania for two weeks to volunteer at Kafika House and immerse in Arusha living. Each day incorporates intentional reflection practices, and dialogue that challenges our understanding of African cultures, our knowledge-systems, and our worldviews. We leverage the magic of this special place to broaden our participants’ horizons and help them grow; personally, cross-culturally, professionally, and as global citizens.

  • Are you a medical professional interested in volunteering your time and talent to treat children in need of life-changing surgery?

We are passionate about organising medical missions that can benefit our children, and offer training to our local surgical partners.

We appreciate donations of medical equipment too, so if this is something you can help us facilitate, we would love to hear from you.

The humbleness and kindness of the Kafika House staff not only support the children’s physical health but also provide them with a total transformation.
